‘You’ Declares Joe the ‘Luckiest Guy in New York’ in Ominous Season 5 Teaser

“You” may be coming to an end, but it’s ending with Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) on top. That’s what the first teaser for Season 5 shows: a sneak peek that ends with Joe calling himself the “luckiest guy in New York.”

True to form for this unsettling drama, not much actually happens in this first look. Joe buttons his shirt and helps his latest victim — er, girlfriend — Kate (Charlotte Ritchie) into her dress. But his internal monologue tells a very different story than the mundane machinations of getting ready.

“Love tests us. I’ve been tested more than most. This is the last time,” Joe says via monologue. “I’ve been through it all —unlucky in life and in love until I met you, Kate. You opened doors for me I never could have imagined. We share a life I would have been quick to judge in the past.”

Several words then flash by the camera, each of which are said by Joe in a disdainful tone. “Aristobrats” and “so obscenely rich” are highlights.

“We’re using our power for the better to help those who aren’t as lucky,” he continues. “Who knew I’d be becoming the luckiest guy in New York?”

If you need a refresher, “You” Season 4 was its murder-mystery era. After fleeing to London, Joe became enmeshed with art gallery director Kate and her wealthy gangle of friends. Of course, Joe freaked out and murdered someone; that’s his hobby. But instead of running from him, Kate pulled a Love (Victoria Pedretti) and surprised Joe, staying by his side and using her wealthy family’s many resources to help him.

In the fifth and final season of “You,” Joe returns to New York to enjoy his happy life. At least, that’s the case until “his perfect life is threatened by the ghosts of his past and his own dark desires,” a logline for the series reads. In addition to Badgley and Ritchie, it will star Madeline Brewer, Anna Camp, Nava Mau and Griffin Matthews.

Michael Foley and Justin Lo serve as the showrunners, writers and executive producers for this upcoming installment. Other EPs include Badgley, Greg Berlanti, Sera Gamble, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, Leslie Morgenstein, Gina Girolamo, Marcos Siega and Neil Reynolds. “You” is produced by Warner Bros. Television.

“You” Season 5 premieres April 24 on Netflix.
