President Donald Trump was not a fan of “60 Minutes” profiling George Clooney on Sunday night, with the president ripping the actor as a “failed political pundit” and “second rate movie ‘star’” after the actor and filmmaker sounded off on Trump’s second term.
Clooney, during his “60 Minutes” segment on Sunday, brought up the president’s legal battle with CBS as well as ABC News, which paid Trump $15 million in a settlement late last year, as examples of the government’s attack on journalists. The segment was pegged to Clooney’s Broadway adaptation of “Good Night, and Good Luck,” which chronicles Edward R. Murrow’s pushback against McCarthyism.
“ABC has just settled a lawsuit with the Trump administration. And CBS News is in the process … We’re seeing this idea of using government to scare or fine or use corporations – to make journalists smaller,” Clooney said.
He added: “Governments don’t like the freedom of the press. They never have. And that goes for whether you are a conservative or a liberal or whatever side you’re on. They don’t like the press.”
The president’s comment, made during a Truth Social post on Sunday evening, came shortly after the CBS news program’s Clooney interview. Trump called the segment a “puff piece.”
“He fought hard for Sleepy Joe’s election and then, right after the Debate, dumped him like a dog. Later, I assume under orders from the Obama camp, pushed all out for ‘Kamala,’ only to soon realize that that was not going to work out to well,” Trump said on Truth Social.
In an opinion piece for The New York Times last July, Clooney called for then-President Biden to step aside and let someone else run against Trump in the 2024 election. Clooney said Biden did not look well at a recent fund-raiser and that, coupled with his performance against Trump in their debate, it showed Biden “cannot win” in his “fight against time.”
President Trump then brought up his ongoing complaint with “60 Minutes,” saying the program “fraudulently inserted Fake answers into [Harris’] disastrous interview” before the 2024 presidential election. He has sued CBS for $20 billion, claiming “60 Minutes” deceptively edited Harris’ answer to a question on the war in Gaza last year.
The president added the Harris interview was “one of the most embarrassing and dishonest events in broadcast history…And now George Clooney again? His press agent should be making a fortune!!!”
