Minnesota Governor Tim Walz didn’t mince words during his latest appearance on MSNBC, telling Chris Hayes that his and Kamala Harris’ loss is to blame for the current state of America.
“Look, I own this. We wouldn’t be in this mess if we won the election, and we didn’t,” Walz told Hayes on Wednesday. “We have to make sure Americans know that it’s not just that Donald Trump is bad, but we’re offering them something better. And I think that’s what we need to work on.”
During his interview, Walz focused on the harm the Trump-led tariff war with Canada has done to his own state. The politician noted that 90% of pot ash used in Minnesota — a common fertilization tool — comes from Canada. He went on to say that these tariffs have made the U.S. an “untrustworthy” trading partner and worried that the moves Trump is making now will harm America’s trading partnerships for decades to come.
“Quite honestly, the chaos and the uncertainty it causes, so many Minnesotans are asking when was Canada our enemy? It makes no sense,” Walz said.
Walz, a former public school teacher, also spoke out about the administration’s “senseless attack” on the Department of Education. The governor said that Trump and his team, including the person he dubbed “President Musk,” view education and entitlement programs as an “expense” and have no concept of the actual human toll messing with these programs will have.
“There is no plan behind this,” Walz said. “Donald Trump doesn’t know how anything works. Donald Trump is this caricature who had a reality TV show where he pretended that he knew how to run businesses. The reality is he doesn’t.”
Walz then went on to call Trump “the worst possible business executive I have ever witnessed.” “What is the goal at the end of the day? There’s not a single economist that backs tariffs,” he said. “Linda McMahon, I bet she’s never been in a public school. What is she going to do to improve our students’ outcomes and lives? There’s a vacuum for [Democrats] to fill. We should get out there and fill it.”
