It might actually be the end of the road for “S.W.A.T.”
CBS has opted not to renew the Shemar Moore-led procedural for a ninth season, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. The news comes as “S.W.A.T.” rolls out its eighth and now final season, whose season finale will now serve as a series finale.
The cancellation marks the third time CBS has opted not to renew “S.W.A.T.,” with the show being canceled after six seasons in May 2023 before the network reversed its decision and renewed “S.W.A.T.” for a seventh and final season less than a week later after Moore and others spoke out about the cancellation. “We have listened to our viewers and their outpouring of passion for ‘S.W.A.T.,’” CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach and Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope wrote in a joint statement at the time.
“S.W.A.T.” evaded cancellation once again in April 2024 when CBS renewed the show for an eighth season during the 2024-2025 broadcast season, marking its eighth year on the network.
“It’s heartbreaking news, primarily because it’s been such an immense pleasure working with this cast and crew to put out a show that we have always been proud of,” showrunner and EP Andrew Dettmann said in a statement. “They are truly an extraordinary group of people who have all worked so hard and have been so dedicated for all these eight seasons, overcoming countless challenges. I can not give them enough credit. I feel so privileged to have been a part of the ‘S.W.A.T.’ family.”
“It’s been an extraordinary privilege to work on ‘S.W.A.T.’ for eight seasons and tell the stories of Hondo and 20-Squad,” EP Shawn Ryan said. “I thank our fans, Shemar Moore, the rest of our cast, our producers, Sony Pictures Television, CBS Studios and CBS for the opportunity. Most of all I want to thank our tireless, dedicated crew who made our writers, directors and cast always look good.”
Ryan added that his “greatest concern right now” is for the show’s crew.
The show is produced Sony Pictures Television in association with CBS Studios, meaning that financials would have to align on both sides for another potential reversion to happen.
In addition to Moore, “S.W.A.T.” stars Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Rochelle Aytes and Anna Enger Ritch. The show is executive produced by Dettmann, Ryan, Moore, Justin Lin, Neal H. Moritz, Marney Hochman, Pavun Shetty, Billy Gierhart and James Scura.
The news comes on the heels of “FBI: Most Wanted” and “FBI: International” being canceled at CBS.
