Rosie O’Donnell joined Patrick Kielty on “The Late Late Show” Friday night from Ireland, where she moved after the 2024 election. While speaking about the circumstances of Trump’s win, O’Donnell appeared to suggest Elon Musk, who she said “owns and runs the internet,” somehow swayed or stole the election.
“I question why for the first time in America history a president has won every swing state and is also best friends and his largest donor was a man who owns and runs the internet,” O’Donnell said.
“So, I hope that would be investigated,” she continued. “And that we would see whether it was an anomaly or it was something else that happened on election night in America when Kamala Harris was filling up stadiums with people who supported her and Donald Trump was not able to do that.”
She added, “So, it’s curious to me and as an American and a believer in democracy, I would hope that we would be able to look at all of the reasons why this happened in our country.”
The appearance was O’Donnell’s first on Irish TV since making the move. O’Donnell is likely referring to Musk’s ownership of X and Starlink. O’Donnell and Trump have a tempestuous relationship and have exchanged insults for years.
The actress revealed she’d made the move to Ireland in a 10-minute video shared on TikTok. “It has been heartbreaking to see what is happening over there politically and hard for me personally as well,” O’Donnell explained. “When you know it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back.” Her 12-year-old daughter also made the move.
Despite having left the country, O’Donnell also said she hopes Americans will “use their voice, to protest, to demand that we follow the constitution in our country, and not a king and not a man and we don’t have cruelty as part of our governing style.”
“Protect your sanity as much as you can, and try not to swim in the chaos, if possible. But I know it’s nearly impossible when you’re there in the middle of it,” she concluded.
