Prince Harry’s Royal Rift Almost Had Him Ditch the Name Windsor for Princess Diana’s Maiden Name

In recent years, public fascination with the British royal family has only intensified, fueled by personal revelations and dramatic shifts within the institution. Stories of tradition, duty, and personal struggle often capture global attention, sparking debates about identity and legacy. For some, the pressure can lead to drastic thoughts or decisions as they seek a sense of normalcy and autonomy

. One such struggle has recently been vicariously experienced by the masses through Prince Harry

, the Duke of Sussex.

The name-changing process is as small as the flick of a finger for the common man today. But someone from The Royal Family, it would take more than just a name to create a shift in identities.

Once a Prince Harry, always a Prince Harry

It was recently revealed by the Daily Mail

that the Duke of Sussex had on occasion considered taking a dramatic step to distance himself from the British royal family. Prince Harry was so unhappy with his royal role and the accompanying pressures that he nearly changed his name from Mountbatten-Windsor to his mother’s maiden name, Spencer.

While the Royal tussle had been spectated by the masses, this particular revelation highlights the depth of his struggle with royal life, as well as his desire to carve out an identity separate from the institution he was born into.

The Prince is said to have considered this dramatic shift in identities amid a deepening rift with King Charles and Prince William. During a visit to the UK last year for his uncle Robert Fellowes’ funeral, Prince Harry stayed at the Althorp Estate and discussed the idea with the late Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Charles Spencer. Earl Spencer advised against it, citing legal complexities and the potential to worsen family tensions.

Had the Prince proceeded to have his name changed, it would also have affected his children’s surnames, symbolizing a significant break from the royal family.
