Emma Stone has been cursing Judd Apatow since 2007 when “Superbad” hit theaters and everyone fell in love with her dyed red hair, the director jokes in a new book.

In an excerpt shared with People from the upcoming book “I Am McLovin: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of Its Generation,” Apatow explained that in order to change up the hair colors of the film’s female leads he made an off-hand remark that, “well, maybe it could be red or something?” That off hand choice has haunted Stone for 18 years.

“So we dyed her hair red, which I think she had never done before,” Apatow said. “And since then, she has cursed me because now people love her with red hair and she’s had to live with that for a lot of her adult life. It was a real tossed-off thought from someone who knows nothing about makeup and hair.”

Stone had naturally blonde hair but was brunette during the filming along with other romantic lead Martha MacIssac. Apatow’s decision has followed Stone for 18 years by people who think she looks best as a red head.

The book release commemorates 18 years since “Superbad” landed in theaters – and now it’s old enough to graduate high school. Along with Stone, the film stars Jonah Hill and Michael Cera as best friends bound to get to a party toward the end of their high school careers. They’re joined by Seth Rogen who wrote the film with his longtime collaborator and friend Evan Goldberg, and Bill Hader

Back in 2023 while promoting “The Fablemans,” Rogen said his young co-star Gabe LaBelle’s favorite movie is “Superbad” which led him to only one obvious assumption.

“What’s crazy is that [fellow actor] Gabe LaBelle is like, 19 years old and his and his friends’ favorite movie is ‘Superbad,’” Rogen said. “So it never changed for some reason. No one’s made a good high school movie since then.”
