and slapstick humor. Without a doubt, Superman
will differ in more ways than one from Gunn’s earlier superhero adventures across the DC and Marvel Cinematic Universe. While humor remains a constant, “it certainly is not as comic or as much a comedy as either Suicide Squad or Guardians [of the Galaxy].”
Gunn affirmed the film is not without its sequential antics because Rachel Brosnahan and Corenswet are too funny in person. However, the focus remains on making Superman
more “grounded
,” but in a “fanciful
world
.” It may differ in terms of comic relief experienced in Gunn’s previous works, but it borrows its fantasy elements from HBO’s hit series, Game of Thrones

What inspired James Gunn’s Superman?
In an enlightening conversation about Superman
with The Wrap before the upcoming trailer release on December 19, James Gunn jotted down the catalog of inspiration that motivated him on this journey with David Corenswet. While his intentions of re-imagining the DC Universe with a younger Clark Kent are known to all, his vision for the film was to draw from various pipelines but maintain its own, separate identity. For example, Gunn is inspired by Richard Donner’s version, but Superman
is not a Donner-type movie.
The filmmaker also borrows elements from All-Star Superman, published in November 2005. However, his creative spectrum particularly relied on Top Gun: Maverick
, using drones to capture its action sequences from an aerial point of view. While the Superman
crew has already earned pats from industry top dogs, Gunn’s teasers of his genius gallery now await the seal of approval of comic book lovers.
