Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office announced Sunday.
“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” a statement released by Biden’s office and shared by CNN read.
“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management.”
Biden and his family “are reviewing treatment options with his physicians,” the statement also said. The former president is home in Wilmington, Delaware, CNN also reported.
While still president, Biden underwent an annual physical at Walter Reed National Military Center with Dr. Kevin O’Connor, who described him as “fit for duty” and added there were “no new concerns.”
Biden dropped out of the presidential race in July 2024 after weeks of calls for his resignation. Shortly after his initial announcement, the president announced that he was endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris. In a post, he said, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
In an earlier statement he wrote, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.
Biden has kept a very low profile since the 2024 election. He and Dr. Jill Biden attended the funeral of Pope Francis alongside President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olena.
