Bill Maher had an amusing take on the obviously pro-Russian, anti-democracy trajectory of the second Trump administration during the mid-show gad on Friday’s “Real Time.”
Maher imagined patriotic posters reminiscent of the iconography of World War II — but of course, the version preferred by the authoritarian enemies of the United States.
“There’s a lot of new stuff that’s going on, but one thing we’ve known about Trump for quite a while is that in the world, the countries that we traditionally liked, you know, like England and France, those kind of places he doesn’t really like,” Maher said as he started the gag. “And the people that we traditionally didn’t like, like Saudi Arabia and Russia, he likes.”
“So this is not new, but it has changed so fast, especially after that Oval Office meeting last week with Zelinsky,” Maher said, referring to the insane White House meeting where Donald Trump and his Vice President, JD Vance, ambushed Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the white house by berating him, lying about him to his face and shouting Russian propagandistic talking points.
“The government has decided they’re going to have to do what governments have done over the years, most famously in World War Two, they put out patriotic posters, because you have to get the people on board with what you’re trying to get them to do. Yes, remember those ‘We can do it’? And ‘I want you for the army’ and ‘loose lips,’ all this stuff to exhort the people?” he continued.
Then Maher showed off the jokes. They were, in order:
I’m sticking with the Union: the former Soviet Union.
Unlike some people, he always says ‘Thank you,’ which was of course paired with an image of Trump hugging Putin.
“Europe. Your ancestors left for a reason.”
“Watch out for Canada, the quiet, polite neighbor you never suspect.”
“I want you to cut dictator, some slide”
“Support North Korea. When has Dennis Rodman ever been wrong?”
“Stand up to democracy.”
