Expect more chills down the spine. Expect more gut-smacking horror. And expect more edge-of-the-seat thrill from season 3 of Squid Game
. It is not a speculation. That is a promise from no less than the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, ahead of the final season’s release next month.
It picks up after the almighty cliffhanger season 2–where the Front Man, masquerading as a player, sabotaged Player #456’s mission. The teaser has already created considerable buzz and got the wheels of fan theories rolling. Now, the words from the director take things up a notch.
Hwang Dong-hyuk wants you to buckle your seatbelts for Squid Game Season 3
Dong-hyuk summarizes three seasons of Squid Game
as thus: the first about exploring the ruthless reality of a capitalistic society. The second was fighting against all odds to upset the status quo. And season 3 focuses on something more fundamental: How do you retain humanity when you are forced to act like a beast? Hwang Dong-hyuk chose to burrow deep into the human mind to fish that out. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 53-year-old director said
, “In the case of season 3, I wanted to introduce games that could really show the lowest bottom of human beings, because the series itself is reaching its climax.

The games that Dong-hyuk is talking about are all inspired by the ones he played as a kid. Take the tug of war on season 1. Dong-hyuk wanted to capitalize on the fear of height among the audience. In the ‘Vertigo’-meets-‘Oldboy’ sequence, only half the players (40) lived to tell the tale. Season 2 somewhat brushed aside those moments of nail-biting tension. But season 3 goes back to the roots.

However, Dong-hyuk was careful with his words, only revealing enough to tease and tantalize, and feed the fire of fan theories on Reddit. At the 1:03 mark on the teaser, you can hear a newborn’s cry. Dong-hyuk was obviously quizzed on the matter. Hear what he had to say.
What’s up with the baby in ‘Squid Game’ Season 3? More than you thought
You probably remember that Jun-hee (Jo Yu-ri) was pregnant. The baby’s cry almost certainly hints that she will give birth in season 3. But that is all predictable. ‘Squid Game’ is anything but–there are endless and more often than not mind-boggling possibilities
. So, yes, there is a distinct chance that the mother may not survive. At the same time, Dong-hyuk doesn’t want to close the doors for other surreal occurrences. “I would like to point out that Myung-gi [Im Si-wan] in season 3, the father of the baby, he goes through a most dramatic character arc development. So look for Myung-gi’s change as well,
” explained the director.
Regardless, Dong-hyuk assures one thing. The baby is going to play a major role in the story–not just for the father and mother, apparently, for every character inside the dorm. The what, when, why, and how will come to light on June 27, when the final season of Squid Game premieres on Netflix.
