Netflix’s Black Mirror
was that one show that had us all staring at the ‘black mirrors’ of our devices, thinking, what the hell even happened. Since it first debuted in 2014, it has been one of the most-watched programs in the world, over and over again. But, in all honesty and per reviews, the sixth season, which came out last year, did not exactly live up to Charlie Brooker’s usual dystopian magic. Even so, fans have been twiddling their thumbs, waiting for a seventh season that can finally get the Netflix series back on track.
Until then, Netflix has something to fill the Black Mirror
-shaped hole in its streamers’ hearts- Tomorrow and I
, another dystopian anthology.
Why is Tomorrow and I being compared with Black Mirror?
Netflix recently released a Thai version of Black Mirror
, or so what fans believe, called Tomorrow and I
. The show, created by Paween Purijitpany, tackles similar themes to those of Black Mirror-
cloning, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. But what makes Tomorrow and I
stand out is that it also dives into topics Black Mirror
has not touched properly yet, like religion. The plotlines are also pretty different.

Tomorrow and I
explores the political/social power dynamics and the intersection of Thai culture with futuristic technology. On the other hand, Black Mirror
examines how modern life intersects with the darker side of human nature. Unlike Black Mirror,
Tomorrow and I
does not try to fix the world. The creators of the Thai TV mini-series pretty much know by now that humans are beyond saving at this point.

In fact, this whole ‘preachy’ attitude was exactly what Black Mirror
has been criticized for since its debut.
Black Mirror
has often been accused of being a bit too moralistic, especially when it comes to our addiction to technology. For instance, the episode Smithereens
practically blamed distracted driving on apps that are designed to be addictive. The only episode in the six seasons that managed to balance its own criticisms while still feeling like an actual Black Mirror
episode was Joan Is Awful
.

Otherwise, Black Mirror
has been criticized for constantly turning every little detail into a dystopian reality, which came across as a bit pretentious. Even with all the mixed reactions to the recent seasons, Black Mirror
is coming back with another season, reportedly in 2025. But till then, for all those who are into soul-crushing, terrifyingly thought-provoking anthologies, Tomorrow and I
is here to fill the void.
