Only Murders
in the Building
has been a great comeback for Selena Gomez on the television screen.
But it is another gracious addition in her work-bestie Steve Martin’s
portfolio, whose lengthy and impressive career in Hollywood needs no
introduction. The 80-year-old Texas-born actor and musician has entertained
the audience for many decades now with his subtle and smooth comic skills in timeless
classics like Father of the Bride, Planes, Trains & Automobiles
, and others. However, the actor also has a comic gem, which was lost in time, The Jerk.
But Martin fans need not worry, as Netflix is once again to the rescue. As the
platform adds the movie to its collection, get to know all about it.
The Jerk – A roller coater of slapstick comedy
In 1979,
Steve Martin made his movie debut with the wacky comedy The Jerk
, which,
after a long wait, has recently arrived in the world of streaming with Netflix. Known
for its nonstop slapstick humor, the movie also raised some eyebrows when Martin
began the movie with his character Navin Johnson saying “I was born a poor
Black child,”
which was his humorous way of saying that he was
adopted by a family of Black sharecroppers in Mississippi and it took him a
long while to understand that he is different from them.

The Jerk
revolves around Martin’s Navin Johnson, whose crazy inventions lead him
from rags to riches and vice versa. Present in this mix is a lady motorcycle
racer, a hilarious series of screwball attacks by a deranged ki—r, and
Martin becoming a millionaire through a brilliant invention. The movie also starred
Bernadette Peters, Catlin Adams, Carl Gotlieb, and others, and boasts an 84%
rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie was a golden starter for Martin’s comedy
career, which continues to woo the audience to date with Only Murders in the
Building.
