The idea for the movie was conceived during a general meeting between Burrows & Mider and Patrick Gooing, who is an executive at Ryan Reynolds’ production company, Maximum Effort.

Serving as its producers are Cale Boyter, the director; Peter Atencio; and the leading star, Ryan Reynolds himself, who, interestingly, was among the top of last year’s highest-paid actor list

. And besides Legendary Pictures, other studios like Maximum Effort and Prime Focus Studios will also be contributing to the production. This team of industry veterans is sure to bring a dynamic, cinematic experience.

Production journey of Animal Friends: filming locations, visual effects, and more

Filming for Animal Friends

began in June 2023 and wrapped in April 2024, with scenes shot in Bulgaria.

The movie entered post-production in December 2024, and DNEG, a leader in visual entertainment, 

will provide the visual effects. The movie was earlier slated for a different release date of August 15, 2025, in the US, but when its distribution rights transferred hands from Sony Pictures Releasing to Warner Bros. Pictures, it was announced last year in December that it would go for a theatrical release on October 10, 2025.

As for the cast, they kept on joining one by one. The project kicked off in 2023 with the early finalized roles of Ryan Reynolds, Aubrey Plaza, Vince Vaughn, and Jason Momoa, who is currently enjoying the commercial success of his latest release, A Minecraft Movie

 Actor Dan Levy joined the cast in February 2024, with the others following him in the same year. The last cast member to join was Rob Delaney in March 2025.
