Nearly a month to the day after Donald Trump’s hotly criticized takeover of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha got a taste of just how much people dislike that takeover via loud, sustained booing from the audience below them. Oops.
The Vances were on hand to see the National Symphony Orchestra perform music by Shostakovich and Stravinsky. But as soon as they were recognized, audience members treated the second couple to an unannounced opening act that lasted more than 30 excruciating seconds.
Watch part of that in the clip below:
The Vance’s white knuckled through the booing, waving and generally pretending not to hear the crowd’s one star review of the Trump administration’s policies.
On Feb. 12, Trump fired several Democratic members of the Kennedy Center’s bipartisan board of directors, replaced them with loyalists, and installed himself as the new chairman. He also announced a new “anti woke” programming direction aimed primarily at Black or queer productions.
Since then, several high profile remaining board members quit, including Shonda Rhimes, who served as treasurer. Singer-songwriter Ben Folds resigned as artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra. And multiple productions have been canceled in protest, including the planned 2026 run of “Hamilton.”
Speaking of “Hamilton,” Vance no doubt wishes he’d received the rather polite, pleading greeting his predecessor, Mike Pence got at a performance of the award winning musical a few days after the 2016 election. Likely it’s one of the few things done to Mike Pence that JD Vance would want for himself.
