“Gachiakuta,” a new shonen anime from Bones Film (“My Hero Academia”), is set to land exclusively on Crunchyroll in July.
“I’ll kill every one of you human beings! Those who looked down on me. Those who pinned the crime on me. Those who threw me down the Pit … I’ll beat the crap out of them. I’m not dying until then!” main character Rudo exclaims in show’s trailer, which you can check out below.
“’Gachiakuta’ stands out as one of the most unique shonen anime in recent years, blending intense action with a striking artistic style,” Asa Suehira, chief content officer at Crunchyroll, said in a statement obtained by TheWrap. “Crunchyroll is proud to partner with Kodansha and Bones Film to bring this exciting new story to fans worldwide, exclusively to the Crunchyroll streaming service.”
The macabre series, based on the manga of the same name, follows the journey of a young outcast who seeks vengeance after he is framed for murder. “Gachiakuta” is set in a dystopian world and is depicted through graffiti-inspired animation.
Here is Crunchyroll’s official description of the series: “Rudo lives in the slums of a floating town, where the poor scrape by under the shadow of the rich who live a sumptuous life, simply casting their garbage off the side, into the abyss. Then one day, he’s falsely accused of murder, and his wrongful conviction leads to an unimaginable punishment—exile off the edge, with the rest of the trash. Down on the surface, the cast-off waste of humanity has bred vicious monsters, and if Rudo wants to have any hope of discovering the truth and seeking vengeance against those who cast him into Hell, he will have to master a new power and join a group known as the Cleaners who battle the hulking trash beasts of the Pit!”
In addition to the series coming from Bones Film, the series was written by Hiroshi Seko (“Attack on Titan,” “Jujutsu Kaisen”).
“When I’m writing the scripts for ‘Gachiakuta,’ it makes me want to blast my music. It makes me want to go out and have some fun,” Seko said in a statement obtained by TheWrap. “And it gives me the urge to meet up with my work buddies and friends for a good meal. An anime that makes you feel that way is the best. I mean that from the bottom of my heart.”
Satoshi Ishino (“Date A Live,” “Tokyo Mew Mew New”) serves as the series’ character designer and chief animation director. The music for the series will be created by renowned composer Taku Iwasaki (“Bungo Stray Dogs,” “Shin Kamen Rider”).
“Gachiakuta” is an action manga written and illustrated by manga artist Kei Urana and graffiti artist Hideyoshi Andou. It began serialization in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in February 2022 and won the Global Special Prize in the Comics category at the Next Manga Awards 2022. The creators shared their excitement for fans to see the series.
“I hope this anime stays in your soul! I’m looking forward to watching the ‘Gachiakuta’ anime together with you all!” Urana said.
“I hope the passion that ‘Gachiakuta’ inspires reaches all of you! As you watch the animated ‘Gachiakuta,’ I hope everyone feels the same spark of motivation!” Andou added.
