Being a cinema buff is not for the faint of heart. And Highlander Reboot
is a project that really drives that point home. Announced in 2008, Highlander
’s remake- a movie so deeply woven into pop culture- has been stuck in development hell for more than 15 years. It was not until 2021 that talks about this project started to gain some traction, especially after Henry Cavill
was brought on board, likely to take on the role of Connor MacLeod. Now, after a long stretch with no news, the filmmaker himself has come forward to give fans something to hold on to.
Chad Stahelski recently shared some exciting details about the plot of the Highlander Reboot
, along with a clue about the filming schedule.
Chad Stahelski teases the Henry Cavill-led Highlander Reboot plot
There is a lot of mystique around how Highlander will be reintroduced to the big screen, especially by Henry Cavill, who is also known for wielding swords as Geralt in
.
However, Chad Stahelski told The Direct’s Russ Milheim
recently that the upcoming Highlander Reboot
will not take place in the “early 1500s in the highlands
.” Instead, it will be set in “beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong”
.
This time jump suggests that Cavill could be playing a more modern version of the character this time. Stahelski went on to add, “It’s a bit of a love story, but not how you think.
” Speaking of Cavill’s role, Stahelski described a 500-year arc of a seasoned martial artist. The action film Maestro also shared that they plan to start filming by Spring 2025.
The reboot is part of a deal between Stahelski and Lionsgate, which gives him oversight of both the Highlander
and John Wick
franchises. However, there have been some major hurdles in the way.
The biggest of these hurdles, scheduling conflicts, have led to a frustrating delay for the project.
The reasons for the Highlander Reboot delays
Every other month, there seems to be at least one report about Highlander Reboot
‘s
delays. In October, a source told The Wrap that due to delays in another major Chad Stahelski project, Ballerina,
the development of Highlander
has been pushed back by five months. And just when it seemed like things were settling down, earlier this month, Redanian Intelligence dropped another disappointing update.

The popular site reported that the Highlander Reboot
’s filming schedule has been pushed from January 2025 to May 2025. This was because Cavill’s Voltron
film will begin its shoot from December to April 2025, leaving the British actor with little time to squeeze in Highlander
. Now, fans can only hope that Stahelski sticks to the schedule he just hinted at and Henry Cavill brings his spin to the cult classic Highlander
soon.
